Raymond "Ray" Daly Smith

May 30, 1918 — May 28, 2011

Raymond “Ray” Smith, 92, passed away May 28, 2011 in Orange Park, FL. He was born to Robert and Lillian Smith on May 30, 1918 in Long Island, New York. Ray married the love of his life, Miss Grace Kidd on September 1, 1940 in New York. They had three daughters, Maureen, Kathie and Kerri. Ray was a World War II Veteran, serving in the US Army from October 11, 1944 to April 21, 1946. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a self-employed General Contractor retiring in 1980. He enjoyed boating and sailing. His love for sailing started at the young age of 12. Ray served his community of Center Moriches, NY in various ways serving on the School Board for 30 years, a 20-year volunteer fireman and was a long time member of the VFW. Ray became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on February 7, 1982 when he joined the Stuart, FL Lodge #1282. He and his wife, Grace came to Moosehaven on June 22, 1999 where he resided for 11 years. He and Grace enjoyed over 68 years of marriage before Grace’ passing on January 2, 2009. Ray was one who enjoyed keeping busy so he was happy to accept the sunshine job as the Chapel Curator. Ray opened the chapel daily and made sure everything was in order. He set up the chapel for weekly mass; set up for funerals and made sure everything was in its place after each service. He did this for years until his health wouldn’t allow it. Ray also worked in our Convenience Store, which he enjoyed very much visiting with all the other residents who came in on a regular basis. When Ray first came to Moosehaven, he did a lot of yard work at Ryan Hall where he and Grace first lived. He always liked things to look nice. Ray is survived by Daughters, Kathie Bernabi of Cromwell, CT and Kerri Giuricco of Babylon, New York and four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
