William A. Mulford MD

William A. Mulford MD, retired General Surgeon of Green Cove Springs, Fl. passed away at his home in Green Cove Springs on May 26, 2012. Dr. Mulford was born in Davenport, Iowa, July 1, 1924. There he attended the Public Schools and St. Ambrose College before entering the Army in 1943. During WW II, he served in the 69th Infantry Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for combat in the Rhineland and the Bronze Star Medal for bravery. After being discharged in 1946 he attended the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Science degree and his M.D. degree. He served an internship and a residency in surgery at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La. After two years of practice in Creston, Iowa he and his family moved to Green Cove Springs, Fl. in 1959 where he practiced surgery for 27 years. Dr. Mulford was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Green Cove Springs, FL. He was a founding member of the Clay County Medical Society and served as President for three terms. He also served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff of Clay Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Clay County Development Authority, founder member of the Board of Directors of First Freedom Federal Savings and Loan of Clay County, member of the Corporate Board of Directors of Freedom Federal Savings and Loan of Tampa and of North Florida. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Penney Retirement community 1966 to 1987, serving three years as chairman. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Florida Medical Assoc., the Clay Co. Medical Assoc., the Jacksonville Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and The Florida Assoc. of General Surgeons. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joanne Halstead Mulford and six children, daughter Artie Ann Franz of Marianna, Fl., a son William A Mulford Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fl., a daughter Julia J. Mulford of Tampa, Fl., a son Luke A. Mulford (Isabell) of Zephyrhills, Fl., a daughter Laura C. Mulford of Tallahassee, Fl., a son Matthew E. Mulford (Kelli) of Green Cove Springs, Fl. He was preceded in death by one son Paul A. Mulford. He has nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Green Cove Springs on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. John Ragsdale officiating.
