George Harris

George Harris, 90, of Penney Farms, FL passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012. He was born in 1922 in Westville, NJ to parents George and Lidwina Harris. Mr. Harris was married in 1943 to Rose Myers and then shipped out on the USS Hutchinson, a U.S. Coast Guard frigate, spending 19 months in the South Pacific during WWII. Mr. Harris excelled in the banking industry retiring as President of the National Bank of Mantua in 1980. He received a BA degree from Rowan University where he taught as an adjunct professor. Residing in St. Augustine for 24 years, he was treasurer of Moultrie Baptist Church, was co-treasurer of the Assoc. of Retired Citizens, and directed the St. Augustine Shores Service Corp. After moving to Penney Retirement Community (PRC), Mr. Harris served as both financial secretary and treasurer of Penney Memorial Church, as dean of curriculum for church Sunday School, and routinely served breakfast at Beyer House. He was well known for his antics as part of PRC’s clown ministry. Mr. Harris was a devoted volunteer and will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, his loving wife of 67 years, Rose Harris, and one son, Jim Harris. He is survived by one son, George Harris Jr. and his wife, Carole Harris, and three grandchildren, Brandie Harris, Kristina Frisby, and Jim Harris Jr. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Penney Retirement Community Residents Aid Fund, PO Box 555, Penney Farms, FL 32079. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Penney Memorial Church, located at 4465 Poling Blvd., Penney Farms, FL, on Tuesday, June 5th at 10 am.
