Capt. Russell L. Moffitt

Capt. Russell L. Moffitt (USN Ret.), resident of Orange Park, FL for 33 years, went to be with the Lord Jesus on July 15th, 2012. Capt. Moffitt was born on September 30, 1929 in Bellaire, Ohio. In his teen years, his family moved to Centerville, Ohio, where he met Eleanor. They were married June 21, 1952, had four children, Barry Moffitt, Jill Duncan, Daniel Moffitt (wife Dori), and Michael Moffitt (wife Theresa). He was Grandpa to ten grandchildren: LeeAnn, TJ, Michael, Danielle, Kaley, Taylor, Mason, Candace, Dawn, and Jasmine. During his 32 years of service to his country in the US Navy, Capt Moffitt served as a naval aviator with over 3000+ hours flight time & 500+ carrier landings. During his honored career he was assigned to several different Naval facilities and served in many command roles (including VS-22 and VX-1). He ended his Naval career as Chief of Staff at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, a master’s degree at George Washington University in Washington, DC, and was certified as a church administration at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. After retirement, Russ served eight years at Saint Peters Church in Jacksonville as leader of the small groups program and as a church administrator. He also played clarinet and saxophone in several local bands and spent countless hours outside tending to his garden and trees and helping family, friends and neighbors. Russ was loved by many and will be remembered by friends and family as a humble Christian man of courage, kindness and compassion. Memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at 11 AM, Friday, July 20 at The Church of Jacksonville. 8313 Bay Center Rd.
