Wade Thornton, 62, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Monday, September 3, 2012. He was born on November 7, 1949 in Fitzgerald, GA to parents Walter and Mary Thornton. Wade was a 46 year resident of Green Cove Springs. He was a 1969 Clay High School graduate where he played tackle on their State Championship team and was their first Prom King. He had worked for Iluka Mining for 25 years and most recently for Clay County for several years. Wade enjoyed shooting guns, football (he was a lifelong dedicated Georgia fan) and playing on the church softball league. Wade was of the Baptist faith and attended Grace Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his brother, Roy Thornton and by his wife, Darlene Thornton. Survivors include his daughters, JoAnn O’Leary (Sean) and Jodie Weber (David); brother, Barry Thornton; grandchildren, Josh Hobbs, Mira O’Leary, Christopher Weber (Jordan) and Amy Ball (Stephen); great-grandchildren, Emma Weber and Makenna Ball and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, September 7, 2012 at Russell Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Russell Baptist Church with Pastor Preston Hayes and Rev. Charlie Hunt officiating. Pallbearers will be John Eaton, Jr., Robert Berryhill, Tony McMullin, Willie Hampshire, Thomas Surrency and Richard Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenny Heselschwerdt and Buddy Johnson. Interment will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Broadus-Raines Funeral Home, 501 Spring St., Green Cove Springs, FL 32043 (904) 284-4000.
