Dewey 'Doc' Clevie Turner

December 17, 1919 — November 14, 2007

Dewey Clevie ‘Doc’ Turner, 87, passed away surrounded by his beloved family on Wednesday, November 14, 2007. He was born December 17, 1919, near Edison, GA to John Edd and Ruth Beatrice Weathersby Turner. Doc’s family moved to Bainbridge, GA about 1929. After graduating from Pine Hill School in 1937, Doc, or Clevie as he was called, went to Norman Park College and then South Georgia College. After two years of college Doc married his high school sweetheart, Agnes Virginia Aultman. Together they managed a rolling grocery store in Leary, GA. By the end of 1943, he had established himself as a farmer and he and Agnes had their first child Marsha. He was then called to serve his country during World War II as an Army medic stationed in the African Middle East Theatre in Cairo, Egypt. In 1946, Doc moved his family to Green Cove Springs, FL where he opened the Liberty Grocery on Walnut Street, which became the Liberty Red and White Grocery and later Liberty IGA. In 1949, their son, Terry, was born. In 1979, after thirty three years of a successful grocery business, Doc and Agnes retired from their grocery business. He always said the dear folks of Green Cove Springs were good to them, and he was good to them. The next phase of Doc’s life brought about time for travel and extended opportunities for golfing and fishing. He loved the river and he loved Green Cove Springs. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Green Cove later joining Orange Avenue Baptist Church. Doc served as a volunteer for fire and rescue for more than thirty years in Green Cove Springs-Clay County area. He served on the City Commission in Green Cove for nine years, two terms as Mayor. Doc was also a member of the Masons and Shriners. In his younger years, he and Agnes were active on bowling leagues and the boat club. Not long ago Daddy expressed a wish to live his life over and when asked what would you change, he answered, “Nothing, I have had a good life.” Doc was preceded in death by his parents, John Edd and Ruth Turner, and then his sisters, Lattie Wynette Saunders of Green Cove Springs in 2000 and Sarah Jane Drury of Brunswick, GA in 2005. Doc Turner is survived by the love of his life of sixty six years, Agnes, and their two children who adored their dad, Marsha Ann (David) Owens and Terry Glynn (Deborah), and a brother Morris Wayne. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Terrianne (Cary) Dicks, Laurie Lee (David) Burke, John Henry Turner (Joybeth), Todd William Turner (Penny), and Ryan Glynn Turner (Jenny), eleven great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.
