Harold J. Chance, 88, of Middleburg, FL, passed away Friday, January 11, 2013. He was born on September 1, 1924 in Kinmundy, IL to parents Clarence and Stella Chance. He was a World War II Veteran, serving his country in the United States Army in the European, North African and Pacific Theatres. Mr. Chance had worked as an auto body repairman. He moved to the local area in 1995 and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Fleming Island as well as a life time member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Chance volunteered as a professional clown and enjoyed spending time in lapidary, gardening and raising Amaryllis. Mr. Chance enjoyed his time working with the group Waste Not Want Not. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife, Irene Chance. Survivors include his children Darrell Hanna (Sue), LaVrene Norton (Mike), Del Chance (Meg), David Chance, Mary Ellen Hummel (Martin), Christina Chance (Mark Plumb), Annette Chance and Dia Langellier (Randy); brother, Kenny Chance; sisters, Betty Mulvaney, Dot Chance and Donna Lou Owens; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, January 18, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Edward Rooney as Celebrant. Visitation will be in the church one hour prior to the Mass. Military honors will be given following the service. Final services and interment will take place in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Waste Not Want Not at www.wastenotflorida.com.
