Esther Ann Garrigan

Esther Ann Garrigan passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 in Orange Park, FL. She was born June 24, 1917 in New Brunswick, New Jersey to Hungarian immigrant parents Gergely and Esther Simon Szalay. Her husband Francis Garrigan predeceased her in 1991 as did a brother, Julius Szalay in 2008. Esther is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Robert Roskell of Fleming Island, FL, a sister, Ann Ver Nooy of Falmouth, MA, a brother, Joseph Szalay of Colorado Springs, CO and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Szalay of East Brunswick, NJ. Also surviving are her granddaughters Kathleen Blair and Anne (Rob) Anderson all of Wake Forest, NC; and great grandchildren Ashley, Theodore, Kathryn (Kevin) Maillard, Thomas, and John Blair, Nicholas and Emma Anderson. Esther grew up in New Brunswick, NJ and in her later years lived in Arizona, California and Nevada before moving to Florida. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Fleming Island. She enjoyed reading, playing Bingo and was a great cook. Esther was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a dear sister and a wonderful grand and great grandmother. A kind, gentle and caring person, Esther will be missed by all who knew her. Cremation was arranged by Broadus Raines Funeral Home in Green Cove Springs, FL and her cremains will be interred with her husband at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Mesa, AZ. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A contribution in Esther’s name can be made to the Outreach Ministry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 7190 Highway 17 South, Fleming Island, FL 32003 or to a charity of your choice.
