L. Hubert Hughes, 80, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away on December 30, 2013. He was born on July 2, 1933 in Nashville, GA to parents Lossie and Zelda Hendley Hughes. Hubert had been a resident of Clay County since 1957. He served his country honorably in the United States Army and retired from the Florida Army National Guard. Hubert was of the Baptist faith and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where he served on the Bereavement Committee. He was an avid volunteer for the Green Cove Springs Food Pantry and received the 2013 Golden Years Volunteer Man of the Year award. Hubert was a remarkable man who made a large impact in many people’s lives. He will be greatly missed by all of his loving family, friends and church family. He was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Claudette Hughes. He is survived by his son, Timothy Hughes (Janet); daughter, Teri Hughes (Tina); grandchildren, Taylor and Rachel Hughes; brothers, Tommy and Leon; sisters, Janice, Carol, Gail and Ruth. Visitation will be on Thursday, January 2, 2014 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11:00 am at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Russell Franklin and Reverend Joe Barrie officiating. Interment will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Green Cove Springs Food Pantry.
