Ret. Captain Jack Burger Austin

Retired Navy Captain Jack Burger Austin, 76, who served as the Commanding Officer of the VS-28, a carrier based anti-submarine squadron, the ASW Wing Commander for the S-3A/B squadrons in the Atlantic Fleet, Commanding Officer of the NAS Cecil Field FL and NS Philadelphia, PA and as the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations Air Warfare died December 26, 2013 at the Hospice Center of Orange Park, FL. Jack was born and raised in West Virginia. He attended the Choate School of Wallingford Connecticut, graduated from the US Naval Academy (class of ’59) with a BS in Naval Engineering and earned a Master’s Degree in Management at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey,CA. Jack also attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, VA. Jack earned his Navy Wings of Gold after graduating from the Naval Academy. His service awards included the Air Medal (with Bronze Star), the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (3) and numerous other citations and unit awards. After retirement from the Navy, Jack worked for Texas Instruments as their Strategy and Retirements Manager. Jack received the “Gift of Life” on Father’s Day 2008 when he had a bilateral lung transplant at Shands of Gainesville, FL. This gave Jack and Sandy, his wife of 53 wonderful years, more time to enjoy their two sons Michael (Helma), Christopher (Sherry) and their five granddaughters (Denise, Sarah, Cady, Robin and Lindsay) and their great grandson (Max). Jack loved the game of golf and will be missed by his golfing friends. Jack will be interred in a beautiful outdoor chapel called The Wegwas Lake Chapel in Trout Lake, MI where he and Sandy have a log home. The Austin family enjoyed many summers at their “Little Piece of Heaven” for twenty-seven years.
