Edith “Edie” Lewis
June 9, 1932 – June 26, 2014
Edith passed away June 26, 2014 in the Moosehaven Life Care Center at the
age of 82.
She was born to Frank and Harriet Watson on June 26, 1932 in Bayonne City, New Jersey. They later moved to Portsmouth, Virginia.
She met Herbert Lewis while he was stationed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where she worked. Herb was scheduled to go overseas, so they ran off to get married on December 29, 1956 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina so she could go with him to Heidelberg, Germany. They had two children Christine and Glen. Glen preceded her in death.
They moved to Florida in 1966 and bought a fish camp called, “Lunker Lodge” in Georgetown and enjoyed the wonderful friendships over the years of their many customers who became friends.
Edith also owned and operated Edie’s Books at South Jacksonville Beach for about 4 years. She designed a “children’s corner” in the back of the store for the children to read and play while the parent’s shopped.
Through the years, Edie and Herb enjoyed traveling to many different states and Western Europe, Paris, Belgium, Netherlands and Holland.
Edith was affiliated with the Eastern Star and Lady Shriners for many years.
She became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose when her husband, Herb joined Jacksonville Beach, FL Lodge #1558 on March 30, 1974. She joined Jacksonville Beach Chapter #1381 on June 5, 1975. She and Herb were both very active. Edith received her Academy of Friendship on January 1, 1981 and her College of Regent’s Degree on May 23, 1986.
She came to Moosehaven with her husband, Herb on April 20, 2010 where she resided for 4 years.
Memorial Service held Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 2:30pm in the Moosehaven Chapel. Services conducted by Rev. Helen Taylor and Officers of Opportunity Chapter.
She is survived by her husband, Herb Lewis, a Moosehaven resident, daughter Christine Largent of Jacksonville, Florida, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
