JAMES HOYLE LITTLE
1939 – 2014
Little, James Hoyle, 74 surrounded by his loving family, passed away peacefully at his home in St John’s County on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Jim, or Chicken as he was affectionately called by his friends, was born on September 14, 1939 in New Jersey. Son of Hoyle and Ruth Little, the family moved to Jacksonville Florida in 1955.
Chicken loved his family, fast cars, loud boats, Delbert McClinton music and NASCAR – his life was fast and furious. He captivated all he met with his smile, his wit and the ability to tell a story. He was the personification of the entrepreneur. He successfully started several businesses. Everything from a vacuum cleaner distributorship in Jacksonville, real estate office in Texas, a marketing company in Myrtle Beach, and just for fun he threw in a restaurant and bar. He was generous to a fault and took care of all those around him. He prided himself on his recreation of his mother’s unbelievable southern cooking and his mastery of the “Little’s Famous BBQ”. His last project before his death was to build (with the help of Kyle) an outside BBQ Kitchen labeled “The Chicken Coup”. His perfect day would be spent in this kitchen with the Boston Butts in his smoker, the chicken on the grill, a race on TV, grandkids in the pool and a shot of Crown.
Jim is survived by a large loving family: his wife of 47 years, Jean Layton Little, four daughters; Joyce Jones (Mike), Cindy Little, Rebecca Harrell, and Tara Crocker (Kelon): 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren (too many to name here); His sister Eva Zahn and her daughter Ashley Folladori (Jason) He was preceded in death by his brother Ron Little (Elfie) Ron had two children Susie Lawley (Greg) and Ronnie Little (Meadow). Most importantly, he is survived by his constant companion, Jackson, his English Bulldog.
At his request, no formal service will be held; however, a celebration of his life will start at 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at 1240 Celebration Court.
