Charles R. Whalen, 85, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Friday, September 5, 2008 at the home of his daughter. Mr. Whalen was born on January 20, 1923 in Massena, NY, a son of the late Herbert & Gertrude Whalen. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy and enlisted in the US Navy during WWII where he served in the submarine corps. He married Marguerite Montpetit on August 14, 1946. She predeceased him in March of 1998. He was employed by the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation as an electrical engineer for many years retiring in 1985. He enjoyed working on all mechanical machinery, boats and ships and spending time with his family. Surviving is a daughter Pati Hartson & her husband Gary of Madrid, NY, four grandchildren; Matthew Whalen of Green Cove Springs, James Whalen of Jacksonville, Jennifer Whalen of Daytona Beach, Michael Hartson of Marion, SC, three great grandchildren Jacob Whalen and Grayson & Koulston Hartson. A son James predeceased him in January of 2007.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Friday, September 19, 2008 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel with Dr. Tim McDaniel officiating.
