Joseph H. Flaherty, 93, died September 10, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Jenifer, Redondo Beach, CA and his son, Joe, Bishop, CA. Born January 24, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA he lived seven years in Mt. Lebanon and ten in Beaver, PA, graduating from BHS in 1937. He did two full years at University of Pittsburgh then worked at Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp in Pittsburgh until grabbed by the Army in 1943 and let go in 1946. He wanted to marry Sally and so he did. Sally passed away in 1959. Mr. Flaherty returned to J&L and worked his way up to Works Metallurgist and in the process won the McKune Award in 1954 for a discovery which benefited the entire steel industry. He returned to Pitt night school and after seven years earned a BS in General Engineering. In 1960 he was hired by North American (Rockwell) Aviation as Research Engineer and as California Registered Professional Metallurgical Engineer, working on projects B70 and the eventual Moon visit, retiring in 1977. Met an old friend, Dottie in 2006 and in the course of renewing, pursuing and finding that it was just what they both wanted and had. This resulted in moves to Pittsburgh and Orange Park, FL and finally buying a home in Green Cove Springs, FL.
