Edith “Edie” O’Brien, 77, of Orange Park, FL, and formerly of Yankton, SD, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Moosehaven Retirement Community in Orange Park, FL.
Funeral services for Edie will be held Monday, November 24, 2014, at the Moosehaven Chapel, Orange Park, FL, with burial in the Moosehaven Mausoleum following the service.
Edie was born to Mathias and Elvera Buschkamp on July 16, 1937 in Bloomfield, Nebraska. She married Richard “Dick” O’Brien on September 5, 1957.
They had seven children, 5 boys and 2 girls. The family lived in Cortland NY, Sioux City IA, Bloomfield NE, and Vermillion SD, before finally settling in Yankton SD in 1971.
Edie became affiliated with the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge when she joined the Yankton, South Dakota Chapter 678 on June 27, 1974. She received her Academy of Friendship degree on May 6, 1979, and College of Regents and Star Recorder on June 23, 1985.
Both Dick and Edie were active in the Moose Lodge and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton.
They loved to spend time with family and friends, dance, bowl, and play cards.
Edie worked various jobs throughout her lifetime: country school teacher, waitress, teacher’s aide, in-home child care, customer service in grocery stores, and secretary for Cortrust Insurance Agency.
Edie and Dick retired in August 2003 and moved to the Moosehaven retirement community in Orange Park, FL.
She and Dick played more cards, darts, spent time with new friends, and traveled during retirement. Edie even played a bit of golf. They were very active in the Moosehaven community.
Edie will be remembered as a loving, hard-working woman who loved to be social and was kind and friendly to everyone. Many people’s days were brightened by Edie’s warm smile and laughter. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
Edie is survived by 6 of her children: Mark (Yankton, SD), Rick (Semmes, AL), Rand (Polo, IL), Brad, Jim (Rapid City, SD) and Julie (Steiner)(Fargo, ND), 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers: Vern (Crofton, NE) and John (Denver, CO).
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dick, daughter Kathy, daughter-in-law Brenda, and great-grandson Tristan.
