Eleanor “Abbey” Akers, 85, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2008. She was born on January 23, 1923 in Merchantville, NJ to parents, Joseph and Josephine Abbey. Mrs. Akers was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Camden, NJ. Mrs. Akers honorably served her country for two years in the United States Navy and worked as a telephone operator at the Navy Fleet Reserve Base in Green Cove Springs. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, loved flowers, and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Josephine; sons, John William Akers and Robert E. Akers; and a sister, Doris Joslen; Mrs. Akers is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Jerald D.T. Akers Sr; son, Jerald T. Akers Jr.; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Donal Sullivan as Celebrant.
