Frederick Joseph Berberich

Fred Berberich passed away at 4:45 P.M. on November 4, 2008 in the Moosehaven Life Care Center, Orange Park, Florida. He was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 20, 1934 to his loving parents, Lydia and Frederick Berberich. He had one sister, Mary. Fred was born with a vision impairment that turned out to be Retinitis Pigmentosa, which is a disease of the eyes that is heredity. He has been visually impaired all of his life. Fred and his family moved to Scranton, PA in 1937. He attended the Curtain Elementary School in Milton, PA until the fifth grade. When he was 10, his parents enrolled him the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, which is a resident school. It was there, he learned Braille. When Fred was 14 years old, he learned how to wrestle and was on the wrestling team at Overbrook until he graduated. He earned his school letter and sweater for wrestling, and he is very proud of both. He also became an Eagle Scout, was into drama and starred in two stage plays, and played a bassoon in the school orchestra. Fred received a Good Citizenship Award from the Daughters of the Revolution when he was in the ninth grade. He also received the same award a few years later from the Union League of Philadelphia. After graduation, Fred worked for the Association of the Blind in Sunbury, PA. He was employed by a s the Milton Shoe Factory as the Cafeteria Manager. He was there for 20 years. He moved to Cape Coral, FL in 1979. Fred became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose when he joined Milton, PA #171 in 1956. He came to Moosehaven on November 15, 2006, where he resided for 2 years. Interment will take place in Trentt Hills Memorial Park in Pennsylvania. He is survived by his sister, Mary Lynn of Gastonia, NC and one niece, Theresa Fast of Sarasota, FL and five nephews, Tom, Tony, Mike, Neil and Ted Lynn. Also many great nieces and nephews.
