God called Everette Leslie “Les” King (48) home on November 14, 2008, after a long battle with glioblastoma multiform, “brain cancer”. Les was born on April 13, 1960 in Millington, TN. Les resided in Norman, Oklahoma at the time of his death with wife Sylvia and son, Casey King. Les served honorably for 20 years in the United States Navy. He retired in December 2001 and took a position at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma. Les graduated from Orange Park High School in 1978 and attended colleges in Florida, Maryland, Washington D.C. and most recently in Oklahoma at Oklahoma University (OU), where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering with a minor in Computer Science in May 2006. Les was known for his many and varied talents and skills. Over the course of his time in the Navy, he was an instructor, VQ4 crew member, technical writer and supported many deployments. Les was very proud of the work he was doing the last couple of years of his life (at the OU) working on a breathalyzer project. This work was funded by a grant through OU. The project would help early detection of breast cancer. Les is survived by his afore-mentioned wife, Sylvia and son, Casey, as well as his parents, Jim and Grace King, sister, Robin and husband, Joe Dean, brother Carl and wife, Donna King and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Les is mourned by his family in Florida, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, North Carolina and many friends in Oklahoma. His family wishes to convey how grateful they are for his co-workers at Tinker AFB. Les’ co-workers donated their own vacation time so that Les didn’t lose his job over the course of his illness. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, November 29th at 2:00 pm for Les’ family and friends at First Baptist Church of Orange Park (1140 Kingsley Ave. Orange Park) with Pastor David Tarkington officiating. Military honors will be conferred at the service.
