Richard Carlton "Dick" Fellows

Richard Carlton “Dick” Fellows passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2015 at Orange Park Medical Center. He was 88 years old. He was born January 19, 1927 in Daytona Beach, FL, the son of Earle Fellows and Grace Campbell Fellows. He attended Seabreeze High School, but left school early to join the Navy during World War II in 1943, earning his GED later in life. With the Navy, he served as a radio operator in Catalina, CA. He later attended Capitol Radio Engineering Institute in Washington, DC, which started him in a career in radio. Through his communications career, he was known as Dick Fellows as he worked at WMBR in Jacksonville, WROD in Daytona Beach, WPDQ in Jacksonville and WWIL in Ft. Lauderdale. He was also an announcer for UHF Channel 36 in Jacksonville. His signature persona on the radio was the character of “Gabby Duck”, his sidekick on his morning radio shows. Richard ran for and won the District 2 Volusia County Commission election in 1966, leaving before his term was completed to attend college, earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. This allowed him begin his next career as City Manager for the cities of Green Cove Springs, Orange Park, Okeechobee and Atlantic Beach. He is survived by his second wife, Mary V. Fellows, three children, son, Charles Richard Fellows (Kathi), daughters, Katie Fellows Smith (Doug) and Grace Fellows White (Job); step-daughters, Marsha Ivey Dukes (Clay) and Melanie Ivey Long (David); grandchildren, Cynthia, Jennifer, Katherine, Douglas, Caroline, Robert, Job, Stephen, Adam and Misty and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 16 College Dr., Orange Park, FL 32065 with Pastor Carlos Otero officiating. Visitation will begin in the church at 2:00 pm until service time. Interment with military honors will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
