William M. Potter, Jr., 88, of Orange Park, Florida passed away on Friday, September 25, 2015 in Jacksonville, Florida. He was born on February 14, 1927 in Lawrence, Massachusetts to parents William Midgley and Arnelia Lusby (Scott) Potter, Sr. He and his wife have been residents of Northeast Florida for 20 years coming from Crystal Beach, Florida.
William was a world traveler and well decorated pilot in the United States Airforce where he served his country proudly for over 20 years before retiring. While in the service, he flew all types of planes and helicopters and lived in Germany on and off for 10 years. William was an R.O.T.C. instructor for 13 years in Springfield, Massachusetts. During which time he taught the first female student in the R.O.T.C. program who now is a retired Admiral and she continues to stay in touch with William’s family.
He loved traveling the world and going to the Caribbean most of all. William’s wife says he was a “magnet” to anything that was broken, always being Mr. Fix-it.
William is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Shirley Jones. Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Louise “Betty Lou” “Liz” (Furnival) Potter; sons, Middy and Sid (Carol); daughters, Alex and Freddie; sister, Dorothy; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
