Barbara A. Harkins

Barbara A. Harkins, 81, of Fleming Island, Florida, passed away November 9, 2015. She was born on June 11, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents Joseph Gilbert and Pauline Frances (Peshina) Melchior. Barbara came to Florida from Minnesota in 1966 and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Green Cove Springs. She taught CCD at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Orange Park for 13 years and enjoyed arts and crafts. Barbara was a school bus driver for St. Johns Country Day School and for Clay County, retiring after 25 years. She was on the Board of Directors for Friends of the Jacksonville Public Library and for Clay Council of the Blind as treasurer. Barbara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved going on annual family cruises. She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Scuss Kauzner and Jane Bennett. Barbara is survived by her husband of 63 years, Daniel Joseph Harkins Jr.; sons, Daniel Joseph Harkins III (Jamie) and Lawrence Patrick Harkins; daughters, Theresa A. Sparks (Kevin) and Diane M. Thornton (Paul); sister, Joan Adeline Graen; 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.
