John R. Barrett was born in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone, on March 22, 1946. John and his wife, Jaye Thompson Barrett were 1964 graduates of Balboa High School in the Balboa Canal Zone. He was a Vietnam War Veteran, serving his country in the United States Army. He was in the first graduating class of the University of North Florida and was an UNF Mentor. John was the Northeast Florida District Manager of UPS, starting his career with them in Jacksonville as a sorter and retiring in January 2002 after 31 years of distinguished service. He was a member of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the Board of Directors of Northeast Florida Community Hospice. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was preceded in death by his father, John Thomas Barrett, Jr., and his brother Mark Thomas Barrett. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Jaye Thompson Barrett of Orange Park; daughter, Jayme Ann Barrett of Orange Park; his mother, Helen M. Barrett of Jacksonville; brother, Matthew William Barrett of Jacksonville; four sisters, Susan Cecil (Bob) of Rockville, MD, Joan Molinaro (Tom Hatcher) of Houston, TX, Mary Hare (Jeff ) of Simpsonville, SC, and Sally Barrett (Nicholas Cuenca) of Miami, FL; one sister-in-law, Juli Butler (Jody) and treasured friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Friday, February 17, 2006 at Broadus-Raines & Pons Family Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm Saturday, February 18, 2006 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Fleming Island with Father Donal Sullivan as Celebrant. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
