Dorothy Waldroop Novitz, 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on March 20, 2009. Born on May 14, 1921 in Franklin, North Carolina to Charlie and Rebecca Waldroop, she moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1954 and to Jacksonville in 1989.
Within five minutes of meeting Dorothy, you would know that she had been born in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. She was proud to be known as a mountaineer or hillbilly. Dorothy served as a volunteer during World War II in Hawaii working in airplane maintenance. On her second day in Hawaii, she met her future husband, George Novitz.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, brother, John Waldroop, sister, Frances Walker, and grandson, Keif Forgeur.
Survivors include daughters: Candy Carmody (Mike) and Debra Ruffino (Angelo), Grandchildren: Penny, Cathy, Chris, Byron and Cara, and seven great grandchildren.
Memorial donations can be made to Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida. A memorial service will be held in Franklin, NC at a later date.
