Daniel Robert Murphy of Jacksonville, Florida died peacefully with family by his side on January 9, 2015. He was 72 years old.
Dan is survived by a daughter Kelley Elese Drawdy (Scott), a son, Daniel Robert Murphy Jr. and son John Collin Murphy (Jen) in addition to 6 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edward J. Murphy, Sr.(1985) and Patricia A. Murphy (2001) as well as by his brother and only sibling, Edward J. Murphy, Jr, (2014),
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, Dan was raised and grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a 1961 graduate of Boca Ciega High School where he was a member of the Baker’s Dozen and played several sports with an affinity for tennis.
Dan graduated from St. Pete Jr. College and the University of South Florida, majoring in Business provided by scholarships in both Voice and Tennis.
Having grown up in the Tampa Bay area, Dan was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed both salt and freshwater fishing as well as duck and dove hunting.
He enjoyed a lengthy career in the industry of finance and spent his free time in later years playing golf.
Convicted in his Catholic faith, Dan became very attached to his church family at Resurrection Church, Jacksonville, Florida. He resisted the choir’s pleas to join the choir until he felt called by God to share his gift. He had a voice that could “shake the walls” and found new purpose in joining the choir. In conversation he spoke of choir and church members with fondness and love.
Funeral Mass will be held at Resurrection Catholic Church, 3383 University Blvd. Jacksonville, Florida 32277 on Saturday, January 23rd, 10:00 am with a reception to follow the home of Kelley Drawdy, 1233 Hickory Cove Lane, Orange Park, Florida 32073. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Resurrection Catholic School, 5710 Jack Road Jacksonville, Fl 32277.
