Richard Benjamin Appel, 90, of Middleburg, FL passed away at home on July 7, 2016. He was born July 29, 1925 in Baltimore, MD to the late William C. Appel and Agnes L. Readmond Appel. Mr. Appel has been a resident of the area since 1997 coming from Maryland and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mr. Appel was a veteran of World War II, serving as a gunners mate on the USS Fayette, APA-43. He then had a 34 year career as a typesetter/printer/foreman retiring from the US Government Printing Office with 31 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 250 as well as the Columbia Typographical Union Local 101. He enjoyed spending time with family, model trains, playing dominoes, movies, long drives, crabbing, fishing and the company of his adored "buddy" Duke, his chihuahua. He is and will always be a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. Richard is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elizabeth (Betty).
Mr. Appel is survived by his wife, Leona G. (Hall) Appel; son, William G. Appel (Shari); daughters Deborah L. Plummer, Sandra D. B. Ault (James) and Cynthia L. Garcia (Javier); 12 grandchildren, Nicole, Richard Shane, Robert, Richard, Karen, Jennifer, Brian, Scott, Eric, Zachary, Michael and Steven; 10 great-grandchildren with the 11th on the way.
The visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, July 15, 2016 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel. A funeral service will be celebrated at 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 16, 2016 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel with Fr. Donal Sullivan as Celebrant. Graveside services will be held at 1:00pm, Monday, July 18, 2016 at Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach, FL with military honors conferred.
