Mary E. Jakeman

Mary E Jakeman, 89 passed away peacefully at her home on the 8th of August 2016. Mary was born in Greenfield on September 11, 1926 daughter of Clifford and Eleanor (Booker) Avery. She was a graduate of Arms Academy and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Mary enjoyed numerous activities throughout the years: Church, Garden Club (Flower arrangements and judge), golfing, Bridge Club, water aerobics and taught Weight Watchers for years. Mary received acknowledgement for her 25 years of working as a Marker at The Players Championship with golf greats such as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price (Championship 1993) and many others. She was predeceased by her husband Brooks R Jakeman, on February 12, 2013. The two met while students at UMass, Amherst and married on April 23, 1949. They were married for 64 years. Survivors include a brother Kenneth Avery, and six nieces and nephews: Barbara (Bob) Ouellette of South Deerfield, Karen Hixson of Kernersville, NC, Susan (Paul) Mathisen of Acton, Craig (Michelle) Avery of Colrain, Thomas (Shelley) Avery of Shelburne, Robin (Tim) Hartnett of Colrain, with 12 grandnieces and grandnephews: Kristin and Alyssa Ouellette, Avery Hixson, Kara and Connor Mathisen, Marissa (TJ) Hoose, Lauren (Glenn) Sullivan, Sarah Avery, Kyle (Laura) , Lindsay, Evan and Danielle Hartnett. Mary was predeceased by her parents, a sister Bernice, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Avery. Her other brother, Donald (June) Avery, died shortly after Mary on the 18th of August 2016. A graveside service will take place Saturday, 24th of September at 1pm at the North River Cemetery.
