Austin Edward Montgomery

Austin passed away peacefully on September 26, 2016 in the Moosehaven Life Care Center at the age of 88. He was born on December 22, 1927 in Galva, Iowa to parents William and Maud Montgomery December 22, 1927 in Galva, Iowa. Austin married Melba Schrenk the love of his life on February 27, 1998 in Reno, Nevada. They have a daughter, Janice. He was a patriot serving his country in the United States Navy and he loved America. He loved to listen to jazz and big band music, and he really enjoyed chatting with his many friends and caregivers he met at Moosehaven. Austin was a WWII veteran serving in the Navy. He later joined the Merchant Marines, and loved to recount his adventures and the people and places he’d meet while out to sea as a seaman and retired in 1991. Austin love to travel, and he loved people. He had many friends and you could always count on Austin for a happy hello and a smile. He never met a stranger, and had a special way of making others feel welcomed and loved. Austin dearly loved and believed in the The Loyal Order of the Moose, signing up 1,146 members and opening lodges during his lifetime. He would stop and talk to everyone he came into contact with, inviting them to join the Moose. He became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on May 8, 1991 when he joined Upper Rogue, OR Lodge #2480. On July 1, 1996 he received his Fellowship Degree of Honor and on May 24, 2003 he received his Pilgrim Degree of Merit. He was elected as Governor on October 4, 2000. Austin and Melba came to Moosehaven on March 26, 2015 where he resided for 1 year. His family and many friends loved him dearly. He’s in heaven now with our dear Lord, Jesus Christ. He’ll be greatly missed, and was dearly loved by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife Melba Montgomery, a Moosehaven resident and daughter, Janice Volpe of Dublin, California. Memorial Services held Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 10:00am in the Moosehaven Chapel with internment in Moosehaven Mausoleum. Services conducted by Rev. Helen Taylor and Officers of Opportunity Lodge.
