James “Jim” Conaway, 82, of Middleburg, FL passed away on Thursday, November 3, 2016. He was born on June 6, 1934 in Fairmount, IL to the late Floyd Everett and Hazel Southworth Conaway. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He retired from the Duval County School Board after 30 years of dedicated service and was a six term president of Clay County Cattlemen’s Association and could be found working the back gate for the 4H and FFA at the Clay County Agricultural Fair. Jim was a member of the Gideons since 1977 and started the Clay County Camp. He was the song leader in church for over 17 years and served as deacon of Hart Haven Baptist Church, Hecksher Drive Baptist Church, Black Pond Baptist Church and Long Branch Baptist Church. Jim cared about the youth programs of the church and he was a devoted testimony speaker. He cherished time spent with his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim is survived by his wife and best friend of 64 years, Marlene Sapp Conaway; children, Cindy Rhoads (David), Everett James Conaway (Edie), Harry Conaway (Sharon) and Charles Allen Conaway (Tammie); sister, Mildred Chandler; 10 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. The family will accept friends from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Monday, November 7, 2016 at Long Branch Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at Long Branch Baptist Church 5500 Long Branch Cemetery Road, Middleburg, FL 32068 with Pastor Charlie Hunt and Pastor Harry Conaway officiating. Interment will follow in Long Branch Cemetery with military honors rendered.
