Carol Ann Poortinga Stephens

Carol Ann Poortinga Stephens, 66, of Penney Farms, FL, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2009. She was born on November 12, 1942 in Harvey, IL to parents, Conrad and Anna Poortinga. She was raised in Schererville, IN and graduated from Dyer Central High School in 1960. Carol worked at Commonwealth Eddison as a Comtometer operator while living in Hammond, IN and married William Alva Stephens in 1964. She became an LPN in 1972 and worked in the hospital setting for many years and later worked in private homes. She was a follower of Jesus and was a member of Lakeside Community Church in Middleburg, FL where she faithfully served her church behind the scenes and loved to help wherever she could. Carol loved spending time with her family and visiting her grandchildren and friends. She will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Patricia Kruhalski. Survivors include her husband, William Alva Stephens; son, Luke Raymond Stephens and wife, Susanna (Raiford) Stephens; daughter, Mary Anne (Stephens) Smith and husband, Cris Smith; grandchildren, Amy, Rachel and Sarah Smith, Virginia Kate and William Stephens and sister, Marcia Matherne. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 7, 2009 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel with Rev. Craig Bowen officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am in the chapel until service time. Interment in Penney Farms Retirement Community Cemetery will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to Lakeside Community Church, 564 Tara Farms Dr., Middleburg, FL 32068.
