Welland “Bud” Short,Sr., 78, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009. He was born on February 22, 1931 in Omaha, NE to parents, Marvin and Margaret Short. Mr. Short had been a plumber and electrician apprentice at an early age and then served his country in the United States Navy and was a Korean War Veteran. He was formerly the Maintenance Superintendent for Magnolia Springs Apartments for 21 years, Mr. Short was a pioneer of Clay County Civil Defense and Ambulance Service. For many years he hauled money with Allen Wager his brother-in-law for John Hall, Sr. and J.P. Hall, Jr. from the Bank of Green Cove Springs to the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Jacksonville. He was also the City of Green Cove Springs Santa for many years. Mr. Short retired from the City of Green Cove Springs, having served as the Public Works Director, Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer. He was currently employed by Jeff’s Excavating and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #2020. Mr. Short also served on the Green Cove Springs Volunteer Fire Department for over 30 years. Mr. Short was formerly a member of Black Creek Baptist Church in Penney Farms, FL and was currently a member of Decoy Baptist Church in Green Cove Springs, FL. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his brother, Woodrow Short and his sister, Donita Griger. Survivors include his wife, Alma "Sugar Babe" Short; children, Jeff (Yessenia) Short, Marvin (Mary) Short and Welland “Buddy” (Kaye) Short, Jr.; 7 grandchildren, Marvin III "Stumper" (Christina),Woodrow "Bumper" (Taylor), Valorie, Holly, Nikole, Rena and Aleen and 3 great-grandchildren, Landon, Caiden and Dillon. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Decoy Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Black Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby Baker and Rev. Bobby Register officiating. Interment will follow in Black Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
