Walter Delos Capes, 92, passed away November 22, 2009 in Orange Park, Florida. He was born to John and Margaret Ellen Capes on September 13, 1917 in Oregon, Illinois. Walter married Clara Hoffman on February 27, 1942 in Dixon, IL. They had two children, John, and Jill. Just a few months of being a newly wed, Walter enlisted in the US Navy on August 16, 1942 and was a Machinist Mate. He was honorably discharged on October 9, 1945. He was assigned to a Battleship in Espirit D Santo but before boarding, the ship was sunk and was lost at Sea. He served on the USS Fletcher and the USS Portland during World War II. He attended Bethel Evangelical Church for many years, sang in the choir, and served in various lay capacities and various boards. He worked throughout his career at Commonwealth Edison in the Maintenance Department. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and dancing. Walter became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on December 16, 1992 when he joined the Sterling, IL Lodge #726. He came to Moosehaven on January 1, 2008 where he resided for almost 2 years. He is survived by his children, John (Tina) Capes of Orange Park, FL and Jill Yardley of Shabbona, IL, also 7 grandchildren, Brad Capes, Melissa Verasano, John Capes III, John Chapman and Christopher Chapman. Two grandchildren, Peter Chapman and Tom Chapman preceded him in death. He is also survived by 6 great grandchildren. Funeral Services held Friday, December 4, 2009 at 2:00 PM in the Moosehaven Chapel followed by burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon, IL. Services will be conducted by Rev.
