Alvin "Al" August Hammer, Jr.

Alvin “Al” Hammer, Jr., 73,passed away January 14, 2010 in Orange Park, Florida. He was born to Alvin and Gertude Hammer on February 1, 1936 in Abington Township, PA. Al played football in college at Penn State University. He then went pro for the Philadelphia Eagles as a wide receiver. Al said he had speed back then and that is what separated him from other wide receivers. He had just six NFL passes before breaking an ankle and ending his career. Al joined the Army February 22, 1956 and received an Honorable Discharge on June 21, 1960. He served in the Special Forces. He married Carol Martin on June 8, 1957. They were blessed with two sons, Al and Mark. They divorced in 1971. Al later met Lois Schlegel Adams and they married March 3, 1986. He was blessed with two stepsons Greg and Scott Adams. Al and Lois lived in Scottsdale, AZ 1987-1994 and he sold Travel Agencies at Franchise Shows throughout the US and they were able to travel to China, France, England, Spain, Ireland, Monaco, Morocco, etc. They later moved to South Palm Beach and Indiantown, FL before moving to Moosehaven, Orange Park, FL. Al became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose in 1978 when he joined the Big Pine Key, FL Lodge #1585. Al was a member of Sailfish, FL Moose Legion #197. He came to Moosehaven with Lois on April 20, 2005 where he has resided for almost 5 years. A ceremonial scattering service will be held at the Moosehaven Pier on January 23, 2010 at 1:30 pm to be conducted by Rev. Lyn James and Opportunity Lodge. Following the service a celebration of Al’s life will be held in the Michigan Building at 2:00 pm. Al is survived by his wife Lois, also a Moosehaven resident, two sons, Al Hammer, Jr. of Sandwich, MA, Mark Hammer of Jamison, PA, two step sons, Greg Adams of York, NE, Scott Adams of West Palm Beach, FL, a sister Joan Doan of N. Palm Beach, FL. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Please sign the family's online guestbook at www.broadusraines.com.
