Mr. Hubert Lee Broughton, (Hubie), passed away 8 April 2010, at the age of 84. He was born and raised in the Carolinas.
A veteran of the U.S Army, he was a prisoner of war during World War II near Munich, Germany. After the war he returned to Miami, Fl and reunited with his bride to be, Barbara Jane Grose. They were married Christmas eve, 1946 in Coconut Grove, Fl. He started his 44 year career as a civil servant at the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and had two sons while stationed in Cuba. After 12 years they moved to Naval Station Rota, Spain, to continue their adventure. In 1967 they moved to Pensacola, Fl, and resided there until his retirement in 1984. After experimenting with sailing for several years, they retired to a life of sailing in the Mediterranean. After five years they returned to Florida and settled in the Jacksonville area where Hubie rejuvenated his passion for golf. He will be remembered for his quick wit, tremendous sense of humor, and love of life.
The eldest of two children, Hubie was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and youngest son. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Grose Broughton and his eldest son, Hubert L. Broughton II, (Buzz), who also resides in the Jacksonville area. He held a special place in the hearts of his many in-laws, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and friends. All who loved their Hubie.
The memorial service will be at the Jacksonville National Cemetery (I-295, exit 32) 16 April at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Community Hospice Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
