CPO Charles A. Colgate, USN (Ret), 79, of Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010 in Penney Farms with his family surrounding him. Born in Nashville, TN on March 23, 1931 to John and Anna Pearl Colgate, he enlisted in the United States Navy at an early age and retired with 31 years of service as a Chief Petty Officer. He worked for three years at Champion Paper in Town Creek, AL and ten years in Civil Service at NAS Jacksonville. Charles’s wife Mary preceded him in passing by eight years and he is survived by his sisters, Shirley Gorley, Bobby Brooks and Carol Pell; his daughter, Barbara Shepard and her husband Terry and his son, Charles A. Colgate, Jr. and his wife Rose Marie and two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Family always came first to Charles and he devoted his life and love to his family and friends. He enjoyed working around his home and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, June 3, 2010 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel with Dr. C. Alan Floyd officiating. Visitation will be in the chapel from 9:00 am until service time. Interment with military honors will follow at Penney Farms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
