George Wilton Hack

September 13, 1920 — July 14, 2010

George W. Hack (89) passed away July 14, 2010 in the Moosehaven Life Care Center located in Orange Park, Florida. He was born to George C. and Elfa Hack on September 13, 1920 in Marrow County, Ohio. George enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 27, 1940. He was a sharpshooter and served aboard the U.S.S. Erie in the Panama Canal Zone and in the Central Pacific. He was awarded a Good Conduct Service medal. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant on November 22, 1946. After his discharge, he continued in the Marine Corps Reserve until November 24, 1950. He was proud to be a WWII Veteran but was never proud of “war” itself. George married the love of his life, Rose Dunnavant on October 30, 1943 in Washington, DC. They had two sons, Arthur and George. He was employed at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Norfolk, VA as a Supply Clerk. He retired in 1985 after many years of service. He also helped his wife in many ways with her florist shop. George became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on January 6, 1970 when he joined the Portsmouth, Virginia Lodge # 898. He later transferred to Hemet, California Lodge #1439. George came to Moosehaven along with his wife Rose on October 28, 1993 where he resided for 16 years. Rose was truly a “Rose” in George’s eyes as he was a devoted husband and lived his vows, “in sickness and health, until death due we part.” Due to illness, Rose was transferred to Nursing Care several years prior to her passing on May 12, 2002. During this time, George never missed a day visiting Rose, and most often, it was several times a day. It was nothing to stop by and see George brushing her hair and assisting her with her clothing or makeup. George and Rose shared 59 years together. Graveside services will be held in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Virginia. Two sons, Arthur C. Hack of Cotati, California and George Hack of Patterson Creek, West Virginia, survive him.
