Richard E. Wood, MD

Richard E. Wood, MD began his life in Colombia, South America on October 16th, 1954. His parents, George and Helen Wood, along with his sister Sheila returned to Tampa, FL when he was six months old. The following year, his sister Karen was born. Richard graduated from Jesuit High School in 1972 and then went on to the University of the South in Sewanee, TN (1976). There he served as the Captain of the swim team along with membership in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was a Division III All American Swimmer, graduated in the honor society Phi Beta Kappa, was a member of the Order of the Gownsmen for four years and graduated with Magna Cum Laude. He majored in Chemistry and then decided to attend medical school at the University of South Florida in Tampa (1979). He served the Orange Park community as a General Practitioner for over thirty years. He was a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Society and was very involved with Promise Keepers. One of his greatest gifts and joys was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and touched numerous lives. Through the years he had church families from St. Margaret’s Episcopal, St. Peter’s Episcopal and was very involved in his current church Celebration in Orange Park, FL. Richard loved being active; competitively swimming on the Bolles Masters swim team, biking, and training for races and triathlons. He held his swimming friends very close to his heart. Above all, his family was the love of his life. He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Chloe’ and husband Robert, son Daniel, and son Zachary and wife Amanda. His mother Helen Wood, sister Sheila and husband Scott, sister Karen, and step-sister Phyllis and husband Nick. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 7th at 3:00pm at Penney Memorial Church with a graveside service at Penney Farms Cemetery at 4:00pm.
