Allen Eugene "Gene" Bridges Jr., 75, of Fleming Island, FL, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at Haven Custead Hospice Care Center in Orange Park, FL. Born on December 30, 1949, in Cumberland, MD, Gene was the son of Mary Virginia "Ginny" (Crites) Bridges and Allen "Jody" Bridges Sr.
Gene was a 1967 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School. Shortly after graduation, Gene began a fulfilling and dedicated career with CSX, where he worked for over four decades before retiring in 2009.
Upon retirement, Gene discovered a passion for running. He trained tirelessly and competed in numerous races, including the Boston Marathon three times. In 2018, he proudly won the Nationwide Children's Hospital Columbus Marathon for his age group, an achievement he cherished deeply.
In 2004, Gene embraced the role of doting grandfather, a position he held with immense pride and joy. His five granddaughters—Katie, Aurelia, Charleigh, Madison, and Riley—were the lights of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Gene’s life was also enriched by his love for American history, his unwavering support for the Washington Commanders football team, and his lifelong passion for railroads.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his devoted uncle, James Crites; five siblings: Diane (Phil) Crippen, Ralph Bridges, Joe Bridges, Suzy (John) Macy, and Tricia Golden; three children: Tracy (Pakito) Bridges, Mariah (Justin) Summey, and Jacob (Skylar) Bridges; and five granddaughters, whom he loved with all his heart.
A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at a future date in Cumberland, MD.
