Annie “Maxine” Highcove, 84, of Jacksonville, FL, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday afternoon, August 9, 2023.
Maxine was born in North Carolina, to the late William Ira Gardner and Macie (Fornes) Gardner. Maxine was 1 of 9 siblings. She moved to Jacksonville, Florida after she graduated high school at the age of 17 and has been in Jacksonville ever since. She worked for Southern Bell (AT&T) until she retired. She was a loving wife to Roger N. Highcove for 64 years. She was a devoted Christian and was a founding member of Bible Believers Baptist Church for 32 years. She was a very loving mother of 2 children (Michael & Susan), and (6) grandchildren and (7) great grandchildren. She was hard working, had a warm, inviting, and loving spirit. She smiled a lot and laughed easily, but most of all, she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Even during the latter stages of dementia, when asked did she know where she was going when she died. Her response was always “to Heaven.” And when asked why, she always responded by saying “because I love the Lord.” She will be sorely missed.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her brothers, Ira Lee, Omax and Charlie Ray Gardner; and sisters, Ruth G. Cox, Hazel G. Willis, Joyce G. Ipock and Gerald Dawn Green.
She is survived by her husband Roger N. Highcove, her son Roger M. Highcove Sr. and his wife Heather, her daughter Susan M. Fleck and her husband Jack; grandchildren, (Roger M. & Heather) Ashley Hassan and her husband Sean, Lacie Dockery and her husband Brandon, Christie Wilson and Her husband Tyler, Roger M. Highcove Jr. (deceased), (Susan & Jack) Amanda Boyle and her husband Devin, Joshua Fleck; great-grandchildren, Cora May, Sean Jr., Declan (Hassan), Braylon & Hadley (Dockery), Kennedi & Rhett (Wilson); and sister Nadane G. Waters of Vanceboro, North Carolina.
