Barbara G. Broughton

October 29, 1925 — March 18, 2019

Barbara G. Broughton was born to Esther Neil and Walter Frederick Grose in St. Petersburg, Florida. She died March 18, 2019 at the age of 93.

At an early age the family moved to Miami where Barbara attended elementary schools and Miami Senior High School. After graduating from Colorado State College of Education she married her high school sweetheart Hubie Broughton, a transportation specialist working for the Navy Department. She was able to teach in the DoDDs schools in Cuba, Spain, and Guam where Hubie was assigned. In 1967 Hubie was employed as Regional Director of Transportation in Pensacola, Florida. At this time Barbara switched from teaching to library science and in 1979 was selected Santa Rosa County’s Teacher of the Year – unprecedented for a librarian.

The Broughtons retired in 1984, flew to La Rochelle, France, and took delivery of an Amel ketch in which they cruised the Mediterranean for the next five years. When they returned stateside, they lived abroad a trawler in Miami and then on the St. John’s River. The two of them moved many times after “coming ashore”, residing in Welaka, Green Cove Springs, and Fernandina Beach. After Hubie’s death, Barbara moved back to Green Cove Springs to be near her son Buzz. She passed away peacefully at Orange Park Medical Center with Buzz by her side.

Barbara possessed a zest for living and adored her family and friends. She lived a very long, industrious, and happy life.

Barbara was preceded in death by Hubie, her beloved husband of 64 years and her younger son, William Lee.

She is survived by son, Hubert Lee II (Lorna); daughter-in-law, Gwen; grandsons, Hubert Lee Broughton III (Monica) and William Justin Broughton (Tonya); granddaughter, Erin Raynn Jackson (Robert) and great-grandchildren, McKenna and Brady Jackson.

We will celebrate the Barbara’s life at 11:00 am, Friday, March 29, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, 300 Gum Street, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043 with Rev. Mark Hults officiating. A reception will be held at the church after the service. Barbara’s cremains will be interred alongside her husbands at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at a later date.
