Bessie L. Buhr

April 1, 1933 — January 1, 2023

Bessie Buhr passed away on Sunday January 1, 2023, in the Moosehaven Health Care Center at the age of 89.

She was born on April 1, 1933, to Archie and Edna Carr in Eastern Colorado. She grew up on the family farm and often helped with chores beginning at a young age. She  had three brothers Paul, William and Albert.

After high school Bessie worked as a nanny taking care of children, cooking and cleaning for $2.00 a week.

She met her husband, Frank Buhr, through friends.   They had three children Larry, Terry, and Mary Jane.    Bessie spent her life working, raising her children, and taking care of her family.   She was Custodial Supervisor of Housekeeping at West Nebraska Veterans Home.

Bessie joined the Moose along with her husband Frank, in 1960, and played an active role in the Moose Fraternity. She held many offices with the WOTM including Sr. Regent and she received her College of Regent degree.

After Bessie lost her husband Frank of 47 years, she moved to Florida to be closer to her family and became employed at Moosehaven as a Hall Supervisor for 13 years before retiring and becoming a Moosehaven resident.

During her time as a resident Bessie’s Sunshine job was the  “Coffee Lady/Receptionist” in the Administration

Bessie was in the Moosehaven Choir, took part in the chapel Christmas plays and was a faithful member in church and bible study.

She enjoyed writing poetry, working puzzles and was known as “Queen” of the Red Hat Club.   Bessie also  represented Moosehaven in the “Ms. Moosehaven Pageant” and she wore her crown well!

Bessie became a Moosehaven resident on October 31, 2001, where she resided for 21 years.   She was a model resident and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.   When one thinks of Bessie, we are reminded of her love of butterflies as a representation of a “new life” and her favorite color, Purple,  but most importantly her kind heart, and gentle spirit.

Bessie will be laid to rest in the Moosehaven Mausoleum.

She is preceded in death by husband, Charles Franklin Buhr, and  her two sons Larry and Terry Buhr.  She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Buhr. Grandchildren, Merrianne Rust, Denise Werntz, James Rounds and Charles Rounds. Great grandchildren, Doug and Davis Werntz, Samantha and Natalie Rust. Nephew and nieces, Rick Carr, Karen and Shirley.
