Betty John (Henderson) Miller

December 6, 1930 — November 4, 2022

Betty John (Henderson) Miller went peacefully to her heavenly home in the early hours of Tuesday, November 4, 2022. She was 91 years old. In her last days, she was comforted and surrounded by her 2 children, 6 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as “GiGi.” She leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus and love for others that will endure for eternity.

Betty John was born on December 6, 1930, and shortly after, her parents, John-D and Mayo Henderson, moved the family to a 300-acre farm near Ocilla, Georgia. There, she and her older sister Edith spent their childhood picking peas, cropping tobacco, and helping around the farm. She excelled in school and was Valedictorian of her graduating class. She continued her studies at Mercer University and Peabody College, and eventually obtained a Masters Degree from Jacksonville University.

It was at Mercer University that she met the love of her life, and on August 27, 1950, she married Earl Barringer Miller of Badin, North Carolina. They had two children. Gary Miller and Jan (Miller) Hollis.

An avid reader herself, Betty John had a passion for teaching young people to read, especially those left behind by the system. She spent more than thirty years as a teacher with Duval County Schools, where she touched the lives of countless children.

In her spare time, she loved to study the Bible, dance with her husband, play (“poorly,” she would say) the piano, take her grandchildren on adventures, correct people’s grammar, drive her x-mark tractor around "the farm," as she called her childhood home, and most importantly, help those in need. She spent many years in service to others.

She also had a number of trials and tribulations during her time on earth.

Like many of us, her life was not easy. But she leaned on our Heavenly Father and His promises, and despite her trials, enjoyed a long, prosperous, and love-filled life.

And for her unwavering faith in Jesus, she now receives her Great Reward.

Betty John Henderson Miller will be laid to rest next to her sweetheart in her home town of Ocilla, Georgia on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 10am, at the Riverbend Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
