Captain Sherwin "Sharkey" Estrin (USNR Ret)

October 14, 1932 — May 2, 2020

Captain Sherwin “Sharkey” Estrin (USNR Ret) passed away into the hands of his maker on May 2, 2020. Sharkey is predeceased by his wife, Mara of more than 61 years. He is survived by their son, Michael G. Estrin (wife, Jennifer) and daughter, Leslie Kim Wellman (husband, Michael), and two grandchildren, Chloe Estrin and Brittany Wellman.

After graduating from University of Maryland he was commissioned in the USAF and earned his wings as an Electronic Warfare Officer and flew a variety of Air Force platforms. After leaving the Air Force he joined the Navy Reserves and was Executive Officer of PATRON 68 at NAS Patuxent River, MD and Deputy CSO for Reserve Patrol Wings Atlantic until his retirement from the Naval Reserve as Captain in 1982.

Sharkey was a Federal Service Engineer where he worked on multiple assignments including the F-14a trainer acquisition. He was the on-site technical representative in Washington, DC for the Naval Training System Center during the development, fabrication and in-plant acceptance of the F/A-18 Operational Flight Trainer in 1981. While in Orlando FL, he was the project engineer for the F/A-18 familiarization simulator and led the installation and acceptance testing at NAS Lemoore, CA. Sharkey and Mara moved to Saudi Arabia in 1984 where he was Combat Systems Trainer principle engineer. In 1988 Mara and Sharkey deployed to London, UK where he was employed as a Logistical Specialist for Naval Activities on Northern Europe. After returning he was employed as a private contractor in Washington, DC in support of Joint Theater Information Systems and Missile Defense Operations.

Sharkey retired in 1997 to McCormick, SC where he organized Community Tennis Associations in both Southwestern South Carolina and Northern Georgia. In 2005 they moved to Fleming Island, FL and were blessed with friends with their same interests in tennis, golf, fishing and dining out. He was an Elk with Lodge 1892, in Green Cove Springs and a member of MOAA and NRA.
