On Sunday October 20th, Christie Staton, 74, slipped the bonds of this Earth after a short battle with leukemia. She was born in 1950, in Colorado City, Texas to E.A. (Bud) and Virgie DeLong, although they moved to Abilene, Texas when Christie was in the 3rd grade. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1968.
A year after high school, Christie married Weldon Pursley, whom she later divorced. In 1977 she married her best friend, Sam Staton, who was serving in the US Navy. Christie opted to be a homemaker and mother and over the years, the family was stationed at several different locations around the country. During that time, Christie served as a Navy Ombudsman and received multiple commendations. She used her experience and pragmatism to help many Navy families through challenging situations. In 2010, she became a breast cancer survivor and advocate. After Sam’s retirement, they moved from Jacksonville to Green Cove Springs, FL. Soon after, Christie was welcomed into the Village Improvement Association, a women’s club where she put her organizational and sewing abilities to work for an entirely new circle of warm friends.
In her free time over the years, Christie refined her formidable sewing skills, became an adept painter and shared her quirky creativity with her family and friends. Many would say that she will best be remembered for her quick-witted, dry sense of humor, her incredible creativity and resourcefulness and for her knack for making the best of almost any situation. She was even cracking jokes in her last few days. Christie never failed to make every person she met feel cherished and included and she always seemed to know just what to say to perk up someone who was struggling.
Christie is survived by her husband, Sam Staton, her daughters, Angela Chene and her husband Justin Chene, Amanda Staton and Kristen Staton as well as six grandchildren. A memorial celebration of Christie’s life will take place at the Village Improvement Association, 17 N. Palmetto Ave., Green Cove Springs, Florida on November 11th at 10 am.
