Master Chief Petty Officer Christopher (Chris) Wayne Monahan, U.S.Navy (ret.) Chris passed away May 2 after a courageous battle with cancer. Preceded in death by his parents Wayne and Dorice Monahan of Lake Zurich IL. Survived by his wife of 34 years Dawna Monahan, Children Shawn, Matthew (Allison), Christopher (Jennifer), sister Kathleen (Larry) Light, brother Kevin (Lori), Grandfather of Alyssa Joy, he held a special place in his heart for his only Granddaughter, and would have been welcoming his second grandchild in December. Born April 14, 1963, attended Lake Zurich High School in Illinois. Enlisting in the Navy in 1983. He served his country for 23 years, retiring in 2006. As an Aviation Ordnanceman, serving in the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Based in Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Chris traveled the world during his time in the military, serving time on the aircraft carriers Coral Sea, Saratoga, Enterprise and JFK during his long career. Chris spent an additional 2 years in Iraq in the military’s employ. He worked his way up through the ranks with an exemplary career retiring as Master Chief in 2006. Chris was proud to be an American and proud to have served his country. He earned the nickname “Spot” for his many freckles, evident of his love for the outdoors and the sunshine. A master chef (as well as a Master Chief) Chris enjoyed grilling with his family and friends, loved shooting pool, the hot tub, darts, fast cars and traveling. Chris was an avid golfer and once out played the Admiral of the fleet on a course in Italy. One of his most treasured moments was when he and his wife, Dawna, attended the Masters Tournament in Augusta Georgia, he called it Heaven on Earth .When not on the golf course, Chris could be found taking his daily walks with his dog, Abby, and listening to his favorite tunes on his headphones. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 pm on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Jacksonville National Cemetery. Please assemble in Lane #1 for the service.
