Deloris Maxine Daugherty Taylor

Deloris Maxine Daugherty Taylor, age 94, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019 at the Community Hospice and Palliative Care Center, St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville FL.  She was born on March 6, 1925, in Akron, Ohio to Howard Waitman and Bertha Mae (Sarver) Daugherty.  Her family moved to West Virginia where she attended Walton High School and graduated from Parkersburg high School in 1943. She also attended Mountain State College and Alderson Broaddus University in West Virginia.

“Aunt” Maxine’s employment resume included preparing taxes, working at AB Chance, hosting a radio show on WOVE in Welch WV called, “Party Line Show for Ladies”, which gave household tips and recipes to radio listeners, and working for the Internal Revenue Service.  After she moved to Jacksonville, she worked for the US Navy Recruiting Office at Cecil Field, then moved to Miami for a short period continuing her work as a budget analyst.  She returned to Jacksonville and retired after 34 years only to return to work at the JAX Metro Credit Union until her final employment retirement at age 77.

Her interests including reading, quilting (taught to her by her sister, Lenora), renovating her home in Vienna WV, and driving.  She drove every day until her sudden illness a few weeks before she passed.  She traveled extensively in the US, Greece, Italy and the British Isles. 

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Lenora J. Cochran, Betty Joe Daugherty, Doris Jean Butler; two brothers, Gerald Smith Daugherty and Charles Edward Daugherty and by her only son, Frederick Jacob “Jake” Alkire III.  She was a devoted mother to “Jake” who was talented, gifted, quite the poet, and very active, but never to busy to help his mother.  Jake’s friends respectively referred to Maxine as “Momma Bear” because of her love and devotion for “Jake” and her willingness to help his friends. “Aunt” Maxine’s most cherished Bible verse was Psalm 37:4, “Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart”.  She always felt that God had done just that.

 She is survived by several nieces and nephews including Carl C. Cochran Jr. (Joyce) and Dwight D. Cochran (Nancy) of Belleville WV, Michael E. Cochran (Barbara), Parkersburg WV, and Janet K. Memel, Pawleys Is. SC, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Community Hospice and Palliative Care Center staff for their compassionate, loving care of our beloved aunt. 

Broadus Raines Funeral Home, Green Cove Springs, FL, have been entrusted with arrangements.   A memorial celebration of “Aunt” Maxine’s life will be held at the Pleasant Home Cemetery in late Spring.
