Donald Raymond Wantage, age 86, of Green Cove Springs, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at the Clyde E. Lassen State Veterans Nursing Home in St. Augustine, FL due to complications from dementia.
Donald was born in Detroit, MI, on June 5, 1934 to parents Walter and Agnes Wantage. Donald was preceded in death by his sisters, Carol and Janet. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Claudia and second wife, Lois.
Donald served as Corporal in the US Army Signal Corps during the Korean war. Like many men of his generation, he spoke little of his time in combat, much of which was behind enemy lines. After decades of silence, he began to open up about his time in service to our country. He continued his service after the Army working as a mechanical design engineer with the new nuclear Navy. He served under Admiral Hyman Rickover. Donald was proud to say he spent more time at sea then most sailors. In addition to his military time, Donald was fond of the time he spent as a volunteer fireman, while living in Yorktown, VA. In work and in leisure Donald enjoyed travel. He was a consummate RVer, traveling to 49 states and Canada.
Donald is survived by his 2 sons, Ray (Muscat, Oman) and Mark (Green Cove Springs, FL), his stepdaughter Georgiana Worley (Ky), and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services for Donald Wantage will take place at the Jacksonville National Cemetery on September 25, 2020 at 11:30am. A gathering of family and friends will follow in Green Cove Springs.
