Dr. James Edward (Jim) Dynan, was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on March 23, 1934, the son of Walter Dynan and Florence Newcomb. Jim graduated from Scranton Central High School. He earned a BS in Biology from the University of Scranton. In 1960 he earned his MD degree from the University Of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. While studying medicine in Philadelphia, Jim met his future wife Jane Elaine Mahoney. They married on October 1, 1960. Dr. Dynan completed his medical internship in surgery at Presbyterian Hospital, Philadelphia and his fellowship at the Leahy Clinic in Boston. When his medical training was complete, Jim was drafted into the US Army to serve his country as a surgeon in the 12th Evacuation Hospital unit in Vietnam. He received a special vascular surgery commendation from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in recognition of the many soldiers’ limbs he saved. After a short period in Utica, NY, Dr. Dynan established himself at the Lansdale Medical Group and North Penn Hospital in Lansdale, PA. He served several years as Chief of Surgery at North Penn Hospital. He retired from medical practice in 1999. Throughout his life, Jim had a deep love of music. He played saxophone, bass, drums, piano, and other instruments in numerous bands from age 14 until his death. Beyond his music, he loved being with his family, being in the outdoors, working with his hands, and walking his dogs, especially Cleopatra. Dr. Dynan was a generous man. He served as a volunteer physician for the Lansdale Catholic High School Football team and a member of the Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart Church in Orange Park, Florida. He would help anyone in need. His big smile and witty Irish one-liners endeared him to others. Dr. James E. Dynan is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jane E Dynan, and by five children and their spouses: Lisa Dynan-Dobbertien (Mark), Kathleen Dynan-Black (James), Linda Dynan (Kenneth Katkin), Patricia Dynan (Andrew Byron) and Michael Dynan (Amanda). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Ryan Dobbertien, Matthew Dobbertien (Megan), Jeffrey Dobbertien, Moira Black, Jimmy Black, Eileen Black, Nathan Katkin, Molly Katkin, Sean Byron, Rachel Byron, Connor Dynan, and Brendan Dynan. He was predeceased by his two younger siblings, Mary Ellen and Robert, and by his grandson Christopher Dobbertien. The family will receive friends at 6:00pm on Monday, August 28, 2017 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel for the Prayer Vigil with Fr. Donal Sullivan as celebrant. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am, Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sullivan Hall with Fr. Donal Sullivan as celebrant. Inurnment with military honors will follow at 2:30pm at Jacksonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jim’s name to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
