Ernest (Ernie) Harris, 74, of Middleburg, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, under the care of Haven Hospice Custead Care Center in Orange Park, Florida battling a long-term illness, while being surrounded by family and friends.
Ernie was born January 4, 1945 in East Liverpool, Ohio to Henry Lee and Erma (Van Fossen) Harris. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving his country proudly, after which he wanted to continue being honorable ergo, signed up then retired from the United States Navy working as an aviation machinist supervising over at least 20 hands on deck. With many years of dedicated service to the United States of America, he then started his own repair business continually keeping his hands busy.
Ernie is survived by his sons Chris Harris, Jeremy Harris; daughter Melissa Harris; brothers Daniel Harris, James R McCraw, Michael Harris; sisters Norma Six, Catherine Kustos, Carol Burnett, Ruth Chafins; stepsons Leslie Padgett, Joe Padgett; stepdaughter Pam Belt; many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and devoted friends. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, uncle, and friend to everyone. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Erma, his wife Patricia Padgett Harris in 2016, and a numerous amount of family members for the Harris clan is extensive and Ernie was a stranger to no one. He was always there to help relatives and friends with household projects, coaching/advising with “Life’s” dilemmas, or whatever else people needed him for, having no filter with what comes out of his mouth, but his heart was big, full of gold, big dreams, and wishes for the best for all.
A special “Thank You” to the people of Haven Hospice Custead Care Center for their friendly care and warm-hearted support during his final days. Also, the family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Broadus Raines Funeral Home and Clay Crematory for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 2:00 pm in the Broadus-Raines Chapel, 501 Spring Street, Green Cove Springs, Florida, 32043. On a later date, Ernie will be laid to rest with his good pal/buddy/friend, Bill Frank, during a military burial at sea.
