George William Allen (89) went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 28, 2018. He was born to George and Ruth Allen on May 16, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio. His family moved to Berea, Ohio where he graduated from high school and Baldwin-Wallace College. He had a twenty-five year career with the Navy which brought him to the Jacksonville area in 1969. He, along with his wife (Dorothy) of 63 years and his three children, made Jacksonville and the surrounding area their home. In addition to his long-time service with the Navy, he taught school, and became a Licensed Massage Therapist before finally settling into true retirement.
George was a lifetime member of the Military Officers’ Association of America, sang for many years with the Barbershop International organization and was a member and past president of the Lighter Than Air Society which supported blimps. He was a strong supporter of the Congregational Church and made Arlington Congregational United Church of Christ his church home for many years. He always loved playing games with his family and friends especially dominoes in the last years of his life.
George was preceded in death by his brother, Robert, and is survived by his wife, Dorothy, sisters, Janice and Berda, three children and their spouses, six grandchildren, one great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a loving brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 10:00 am in the Broadus-Raines Chapel in Green Cove Springs, Florida.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, Florida.
