George W. Penney, Jr. died peacefully at the age of 95 at his home in Fleming Island, FL on October 5, 2023.
He was born in Boston, MA on December 31, 1927 to George and Elsie (Hiscock) Penney.
He graduated from Everett High School, served in the US Army, and got his BS in mechanical engineering from Tufts.
He worked for many years as a senior engineer at W.R. Grace until his retirement. He was married to Jeanne (Bardi) Penney for 25 years and had 2 children, Jamie and David.
He is survived by his loving companion of 25 years, Betty Smith of Fleming Island, his daughter, Jamie Penney of North Reading MA, his daughter-in-law, Celeste (Plante) Penney and his grandson, David Penney Jr. of Tewksbury MA, and his godchildren William (Skip) Perry and Jeanine Perry. He was his preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mildred (Penney) Ilsley, his brother John Penney, his son, David Penney Sr, and his son-in-law, Kimo Lindon.
He was a born engineer and he spent many years building houses for Habitat for Humanity. Because he couldn’t get enough of that, he was constantly involved in various home construction projects on his own homes, and those of his kids. He was a lifetime member of the Elks and was very proud that his son David followed in his footsteps. He loved to travel and he and Betty had many adventures all over the world. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies on Cape Cod and in Florida.
A memorial service will be held in the Broadus-Raines Chapel at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 28, 2023, with Chaplain Brent Beaird officiating. A graveside service will be held at Jacksonville National Cemetery at 11:00 am on Monday, October 30, 2023, with Dr. Tim McDaniel officiating.
